Colourful buds form in the autumn proving long-lasting winter interest, the buds eventually open in the spring and are often scented.
They prefer an acid soil to grow successfully if your soil is not suitable, they make good container plants. Vine weevil love skimmia plants and are sure to find them, watch out for leaf notching and treat the roots every year.

Skimmia rubella is the one you are most likely to find on sale, it is produced in huge quantities by specialist nurseries. It is a male plant so will flower but not produce berries.

Some are grown for the brightly coloured berries.

To make sure your skimmia forms berries you will need a male and female plant but there are some self-fertile ones.
