Often called forest flame, the young spring growth is brightly coloured.
Everybody’s favourite, the bright red shoots are very seductive, most gardeners will have tried to grow one.
They are slightly fussy, the soil or compost should be acidic and they need a sheltered spot to protect the shoots from frost.
They make good spring patio pots underplanted with spring bulbs.

They grow best in a sheltered area, protected from frost and wind.

Spring frost may burn the young shoots, but they will grow back.

The bright red shoots catch the eye, but keep some fleece handy when frosty.
