Step by step

Find some foliage

If you have a look in your garden or when you are out walking, you will find lots of different evergreen foliage. Pick different textures and colours. Brightly coloured stems, cones, berries and seed heads are also worth collecting.

Trim them to size

You need to cut your foliage to about 15 cm (6″) long.

Cones, berries and seed heads can have wires attached this will make it easier to add to your pot

Choose a pot

We have used a standard 10 cm pot with an oasis block, you could use sand or compost. If you use a bigger pot, bowl or trough just use bigger pieces of foliage.

Lay out the first layer

lay out the first layer around the pot, it will help you plan the design and you can check if you have enough stems.

Start inserting the pieces

Start pushing the stems into the oasis or sand, put them in at an angle about 30 degrees.

Add another layer

Start adding another layer, at a slightly steeper angle, taking care to fill in any gaps in the first layer. Use contrasting colours and textures
